Pet Care Tips for Summer
Summer means fun time for you and your pet. You can spend quality time with your pets outdoor, strolling in the park or driving them with you for shopping. But this can be sometimes fatal for your companion because pets cannot endure excessive heat in their body for too long. In order to enjoy summer with your pet friend you have to take few measures so that your pet stays healthy. Here are few tips that can ensure your companion has a safe summer.
Hydrate Your PetDuring summers your pet need plenty of water. It doesn’t matter your pet was kept indoor all day or went out with you .Check their bowls several times in a day to insure it’s full. If you decide to take your pet with you in the afternoon also bring water along with you. If the bowl is empty the pet will may attempt to drink from water puddles and other sources of water which may include toxics substances like anti-freeze. When walking on the streets make sure that your pet doesn’t wander anywhere or eat something unhealthy.
Avoid Leaving your Pet in the CarYou may assume that it is much cooler in the car, but you are wrong. Even with the windows down the temperature in your car can increase rapidly in matter of minutes. If need to do some work then leave your pets at home. Always tie the big pets like dogs in the shade; it will prevent them from fighting with other animals, consuming unhealthy food and getting lost.
Take Care of their BodyPets also need sunscreen to protect their skin from sunburn. Although the furry animals are protected by their fur but those animals which have light fur surely need it. When going out apply the sunscreen on unprotected area like nose, ears and around the lips. Keep the fur well groomed as they are designed to prevent them from heat. Tangled fur will trap more heat and will prevent heat loss, especially in thick coated animals. Brush the fur regularly to straighten up the fur.
HumidityPets usually have difficulty in loosing excessive heat during humid temperature. They only sweat from their paws and to lose more heat they breathe heavily which allows it to exhale excessive heat through their mouth.
ExercisingPets also need exercise even during summer, but take strong precautions while exercising your pets. Always go for a walk in the morning or evening avoid going in the afternoon because the road gets too hot and their paws cannot withstand strong heat and will burn. They will also get sunburn or heat stroke.
Pets that Need Special Care There are pets that have a tough time maintaining their body temperatures. These include very old pets, young and ill pets. Ensure that they stay cool as they can’t breathe efficiently. During a walk take them slowly, avoiding over heat. Older pets usually have thick skin which hinders their breathing abilities. Avoid leaving them unsupervised for too long even if you tie them in shade because shade will move from its place after some time.
Watch Out for Heat StrokesHeatstroke is a severe medical condition that needs to be treated immediately. If you are suspicious that your pet is having heatstroke, call the emergency at once otherwise further delay can make it fatal. Meanwhile you can wrap a wet towel around your pet to lower the temperature. Even in the veterinarian care extra treatment will be further advised to regulate their body temperature. However, with medical treatment they can still become serious, the greatest treatment is prevention.
